The Easiest DIY Shelf

DIY Floating Shelf

Hi guys! So this is probably one of the easiest DIY projects you could ever do. I made this shelf with 4 items, some screws and sandpaper. That's it! My boyfriend and I just moved into a new place and made this for our old apartment for above our couch. I sadly only have the picture below of it hanging in our old place, and if you know me, you know how much it took for me to post it due to my hideously un-made couch.

Okay - are you ready to hear how easy this floating shelf is to make? I bought a 1x10x8 ft unfinished pine wooden plank from Home Depot, some 5 inch L brackets, and 12 screws... yep, that's it. This shelf is great because you can make it as big or as little as you want, I just wanted something a bit longer than my couch so I went 8 feet long. The key is taking your time finding the perfect piece of wood at the store. You'll see in all of my projects that picking out the prettiest plank is very important to me. For this shelf, I wanted something clean with not much grain or many noticeable notches. Once you find "the one" and bring her home, give her a nice sanding on the edges (for this I just used a piece of sandpaper and my hands, nothing fancy) and then you're off to hanging it!

Since it's a shelf and you'll most likely be putting stuff on it, we went ahead and used the studs in the wall to find our hanging spot. I'd suggest doing that with yours too! Studs are typically 16 inches apart so once you find one, the other 2 should be fairly easy. I tell myself that I have a superpower of being able to find a stud by hitting the wall with my knuckle and hearing the difference between the hollow wall and stud.... but I also have a stud finder to back me up :) Once you find those studs, mark them out with the desired height on your wall as well as on the piece of wood. I knew that I would be putting large photos on my shelf, so I decided to place the brackets like this:

this way you don't see the bracket hanging below the shelf and it has more of a floating appearance. When you're all marked up, it's time to hang!! I love the way this shelf turned out, it's such a statement piece for any wall... and not to mention SUPER easy!

Hope you guys love this DIY floating shelf as much as I do! It was such a fun project for me. If you make one yourself, please tag or DM me!!! @oliviapugmire
